Life Story for Vera Marie McSwain (Schroeder)

Mrs. Vera Marie (Schroeder) McSwain, age 88, of Indianapolis, Indiana, formerly of Switzerland County, Indiana, entered this life on March 5, 1931, in Patriot, Indiana, the loving daughter of the late, Cliva E. and Clara M. (Uhlmansiek) Schroeder. She was raised in Switzerland County where she was a 1949 graduate of the Patriot High School. Vera was united in marriage on July 24, 1954 at the Concord Community Church in Patriot, Indiana to the late, Russell David McSwain. This happy union was blessed with two sons, Kevin and Brian. Russell and Vera shared 61 loving years of marriage together until Russell passed away on August 16, 2015. In 1991, Vera was employed as the county extension director for the Switzerland County ASCS Office in Vevay, Indiana, retiring in 1998, after 30 years of service. Russell and Vera resided all of their lives in the Switzerland County community until moving in 2008 to the Indianapolis community to be near their son and grandchildren. She was a wonderful homemaker, devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt and dear friend. Vera passed away at 2:31 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Aspen Trace in Greenwood, Indiana.

Vera will be deeply missed by her son, Brian McSwain and his wife, Susie of Indianapolis, IN; her grandchildren, Heather Dornbusch and her husband, Ben, Benjamin D. McSwain, Brianna M. McSwain and Jenna M. McSwain all of Indianapolis, IN; her great-granddaughters, Clara and Abigail Dornbusch of Indianapolis, IN; her sisters-in-law, Marguerite Schroeder of Bedford, IN, Mary Lou Hart of Madison, IN and Charlene McSwain of Decatur, IN and her several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cliva E. and Clara M. (Uhlmansiek) Schroeder; her husband, Russell David McSwain, died August 16, 2015; her son, Kevin W. McSwain, died March 12, 1989; her brother, Harold C. Schroeder, died July 6, 2002; her sister, Irene Smith, died April 16, 1998; her brother-in-law, Harold Fels, died December 25, 2009; her sister-in-law, Wilma Jean Fels, died March 31, 2017 and her brother-in-law, James W McSwain, died January 20, 2018.

Vera's greatest hobby was her family. Their joy was her joy. She enjoyed watching college basketball and the Cincinnati Reds. Vera was especially involved in tractor pulling with Russell, Kevin and Brian and later with her grandchildren. Vera always looked forward to her ASCS retirement luncheons.

Stan Steury

Brian and Family,
We will greatly miss your Mother. As a new kid coming into Switzerland County, Vera was just what I needed. She was a mentor to me, gave me complete access to her office and provided me with everything I needed to do a good job. Vera was so kind and welcoming to me as the new guy. I felt like she made me an adopted member of her family. With your connection to Lannie, the connection between your parents and Carrie and I was made even closer. Working with Vera was great. She was very professional and fair, and she made our work fun. As busy and overwhelmed as work became sometimes, she made sure that she always had time for the morning break and someone always brought some goodies to share. Not great for our waistlines, but great for our work and for our friendship. Your Mom, Dad, Kevin, and Your whole family will always hold and warm spot in our hearts.
