Life Story for Kirk A. Works

Kirk A. Works
Mr. Kirk Alan Works, age 53, of Vevay, Indiana, passed away at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 07, 2018, at King’s Daughter’s Hospital in Madison, Indiana. Kirk entered this life April, 18th, 1964, in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the son of Tommie and Rita (Martin) Works. He spent his childhood in the East Enterprise neighborhood and attended Allensville Grade School. While growing up, he enjoyed helping his Grandma and Grandpa Martin milk their cows. He also had fond memories of Sunday dinners at Grandma Works’, where he played softball with all of his cousins. Kirk attended Switzerland County Jr./Sr. High School from 1977-1982. He was the Salutatorian of his senior class. During his high school years, he helped on the family farm working in hay and tobacco. He also worked for his neighbors, the Green’s, in tobacco and milking cattle. Before leaving for college, Kirk worked during the summer at the Jefferson Proving Ground in Madison, Indiana. After high school, Kirk attended the University of Evansville from 1982-1987. He was a double major in computer information systems and business administration. During college he worked in the computer lab on campus and at Lazarus. After graduating, he continued both of those jobs in addition to working at Krohn, Collins, and D’Amour doing billing and accounting from February 1989 thru August of 1991. Kirk returned to his hometown of Vevay, Indiana in August 1991 where he started work at North American Stainless. He worked there until June of 1994, when he went to work for Gallatin Steel. Kirk was a dedicated employee of Nucor Gallatin Steel until May 2017, when he was physically unable to continue working. Soon after his return to his hometown, he found his true calling of giving back to the community he so loved. Kirk was inducted into the Lions Club on April, 13 1992. In 1994, he became the President of the Swiss Wine Festival. He had a grand vision for where he wanted to take the festival. He moved the festival to the Paul Ogle Park in 1997. He enjoyed traveling the state to visit other festivals and checking out bands to get ideas for how he could improve the SWF. He pushed limits and brought in national bands. Last year the festival topped 25,000 attendees. With the help of countless volunteers, the Swiss Wine Festival has become one of the best festivals in the state. Kirk was selfless with his time and energy. He served as President of the Lions Club from 1995-1996. He also became a board member for the Indiana State Festival Association on November 10, 1996. He served as the President in 2009 and 2010 and has been the treasurer since 2011. He was the treasurer for the Switzerland County Republican Party & was the current precinct committee chairman for Craig Township & had served as vice chairman. Kirk was a founding member of the Switzerland County Community Foundation where he served from 1997 until 2004. In 2007 he was elected to the Vevay town council where he served until 2012. Kirk received many awards for his service. In 2007, he was awarded the Josephine Hauck award for his significant contributions to Indiana Festivals. In 2016, he was a torch bearer for the Indiana bicentennial celebration. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship for his service with the Lions Club in 2017. The town of Vevay named a street after him for all of his contributions to the town. Also in 2017, he received the highest honor an Indiana citizen can receive. The Sagamore of the Wabash was presented to him by Representative Randy Frye on behalf of Governor Eric Holcomb for his years of service to the community of Vevay and Switzerland County Indiana. Kirk was diagnosed with cancer in 2010 but he didn’t let it slow him down. He took a year off of work for treatments but continued with his non-profit work. The cancer came back in 2014 but he fought it with the same vigor that he used in his service to the community. He traveled to Nashville and Cleveland seeking trial drugs to slow the deadly disease. Ultimately, the cancer won but he was courageous in his fight. Kirk will be sorely missed by the entire community that he served until the end. He was a visionary, ambassador and true servant to the citizens of Vevay and Switzerland County Indiana.

Kirk will be deeply missed by his loving parents, Tommie D. and Rita Kay (Martin) Works of East Enterprise, IN; his brother, Kent Works of Indianapolis, IN; his sister, Kendra Johnson and her husband: Bobby of Bennington, IN; his nephew and niece, Blake and Brooke Johnson of Bennington, IN and his several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
