Life Story for Jane Monroe (Hamilton)

Mrs. Jane (Hamilton) Monroe, age 95, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 21, 2019 due to God’s mercies, the compassionate care of Westminster Oaks and Big Bend Hospice following a stroke on January 14th. She was born on April 29, 1923 as Ella Jane Hamilton in Albemarle, North Carolina to Fuchsia and Iron Lee Hamilton. She was the oldest daughter of seven children. Jane met her future husband, Harold Bertram Monroe, while attending God’s Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were married in 1943 and served together as Harold pastored Wesleyan churches in Ohio and Iowa for over fifty years while they raised three children. Jane returned to school at Drake University to complete her MA in Education and taught elementary children in Iowa and Ohio public schools for over 30 years. Jane was an extraordinary pastor’s wife, school teacher, homemaker and mother. She loved baking (famous for her yeast rolls), sewing, music and crafting. Jane and Harold moved to Tallahassee in 2001 to be close to family. In 2005 they joined Westminster Oaks and experienced the benefits of living in fellowship and support at all levels of care; independent, assisted living, rehabilitation and skilled nursing.

Jane is survived by her children, Gloria Murray and her husband, Carl, John Monroe and his wife, Pam, Barbara Shackelford and her husband Paul; her grandchildren, Shawn Lavy and his wife, Lisa, Abigail St. Hilaire and her husband, David, Megan Hill and her husband, Sean, Zachary Shackelford and his wife, Maggie and Joshua Shackelford and his wife, Megan; her great grandchildren, Ally, Sam, Jed, Ginny, Ellie, Nova and Rilla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fuchsia and Iron Lee Hamilton; her husband of 63 years, Rev. Harold B. Monroe, died October 2, 2011; her brothers, Charles Brooks, Burnest Lee and James Winfred Hamilton and her sisters, Martha Irene Trexler and Sara Frances Haruyama.

Friends may call 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9, 2019, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, February 9, 2019, at 1:00 p.m., by Rev. Ed Fisher at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
