Life Story for Irma Whitham (Courtney)

Mrs. Irma (Courtney) Whitham, age 98, of Vevay, Indiana, Irma entered this life on August 2, 1920, on Tapp's Ridge in Switzerland County, Indiana, the loving daughter of the late, Ernest and Laura Belle (Ballard) Courtney. She was raised in Switzerland County, Indiana and attended East Enterprise, Mt. Hope, Tater Bug, Riverview and Greenwood that were one room school houses. Irma was a 1938 graduate of the Vevay High School, where she was active in softball and basketball. Irma lived to tell that when she was in school her bus was a covered wagon driven by, Elmer Krall. Irma graduated from Indianapolis Beauty School in Indianapolis, Indiana. Irma was united in marriage to Dalbert Floyd "Dabby" Whitham on January 11, 1942, in Patriot, Indiana, by Rev. Lowe. This happy union was blessed with two sons, Floyd Ray and Dennis Lee Whitham. Irma and Dabby shared over 66 years of marriage together until he passed away on August 12, 2008. When Dabby was in the service, they were stationed in Madison, Indiana. Irma was a former beautician in Madison, Indiana. She was employed in the cafeteria for the Jefferson Proving Ground and for a restaurant in Madison, Indiana. She was a broker for Courtney & Whitham Real Estate in Vevay, Indiana. Irma was also employed for Sears & Roebuck Company in Bloomington, Indiana and Springfield, Illinois and sold Avon in Alaska. Irma was a member of the Ruter Chapel United Methodist Church, Switzerland County Athletic Club, Vevay Tri-Kappa, Belle's of St. Mary Home Economics Club in Moorefield, Indiana, and Bennington Order of Eastern Star Chapter #407. Irma had the honor of being a Kentucky Colonel. Irma resided in Ft. Knox, Kentucky, Arizona, Vevay, Indiana, Alaska, Bloomington, Indiana, Germany and Springfield, Illinois. Irma resided since 1966 in the Switzerland County community. Irma was a wonderful homemaker and was an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards, needle work, and watching the Cincinnati Red's play. She will be deeply missed by her loving family and abundance of friends. Irma passed away at 8:20 a.m., Friday, March 8, 2019, at the Swiss Villa Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Vevay, Indiana.

Irma will be lovingly remembered by her son, Floyd Ray Whitham and his wife, Sundra of Vevay, IN; her daughter-in-law, Alice Faye (Edwards) Whitham of Vevay, IN; her grandchildren, Timothy Floyd Whitham and his wife, Jayna, Thomas Courtney Whitham and his wife, Melanie, Travis Michael Whitham and his wife, Rebecca, Kandy Lee Powers and her husband, Michael and April Dawn Whitham; her great-grandchildren, Devyn, Andrew, Courtney, Christopher, Conner, Hadley, Callie, Henley, Holden and Hayes; her step-grandchildren, Stephen and John Sieglitz and her several nieces, nephews, a host of neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Laura Belle (Ballard) Courtney; her husband, Dalbert "Dabby" Floyd Whitham, died August 12, 2008; her son, Dennis Lee Whitham, died January 20, 2014 and her brother, Raymond E. Courtney.

Friends may call 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043. Vevay Tri-Kappa and Bennington Order of Eastern Star Chapter #407 will conduct services at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at 11:00 a.m., by Pastor KC Banta, at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home, 208 Ferry Street Vevay, Indiana 47043.

Interment will follow in the Vevay Cemetery, Vevay, Indiana.
